Maynard Dixon lived a very interesting life and people like myself are always happy to get a glimpse of that life story through art and ephemera. In the case of this item, it is both a piece of art as well as an example of correspondence between himself and his friends “Fred and GG.” The image is a watercolor painting of a Native American Women that he met on one of his trips through the West. The @tucsonmuseumofart has a fantastic collection of Western art and this Maynard Dixon is one of my favorites. The painting is of the Ronstadt house (as in legendary singer/songwriter Linda Ronstadt) and Dixon was their neighbor. What’s interesting is that Maynard actually removed a window that was a part of the house, something he would do more and more the older he got. This act of simplification is something that separated Dixon from many of his contemporaries in that, sure, he painted what

Maynard Dixon painted “Lavanderas” 5 years after a trip to Mexico with his friend Xavier Martinez. What’s interesting is that, at the time, Dixon was living in New York City but he scribed his San Francisco address on the back of the painting. I believe this was a sign he was in high spirits thinking about his journey back to the West. This painting is in our Annual Western and Native Art Auction ending today at 12:00 PM (MST).
