A question I get quite often is “what are you going to do now that it’s winter?” Or “Are there winter mushrooms in Wisconsin?!” And I must say it can be dull compared to the other seasons and quite funny how suddenly all the crusty fungus I would pass most of the year suddenly becomes eye catching. It’s caused a lot of harm to ecosystems but is an edible plant that makes a really good pesto! Be sure to wash it very good as it hangs out low to the ground and try to harvest off trail. Let’s talk Russula! Russula brevipes is so much fun to find because when you find one, you’ve certainly found many! These edible mushrooms grow LARGE and make your hike feel like a mystical fae walk as they break through the forest floors all over the country! I find them the most in conifer forests, but these ectomycorrhizal fungi can grow in many mixed forests. Eat them, dance with them, touch them and hear their sweet asmr sound! It’s okay to pick them.
