I suddenly have these little brown icons (looks like a small file box) on most of my files, Word, pdf, photos, etc. I've googled the daylights out of this and apparently lots of folks have the same question but no one has an answer.

For example I have the Windows Live icon that is pinned to the taskbar but it is showing the default MS OS image (the one when the OS does not reconize the file the shortcut targets).

Click Browse and navigate to the folder where you saved the custom icon and select it. Click Open and OK your way out of that dialog. The shortcut will display that icon permanently. Hope this helps.
