Onyx® — our flagship Composite Base material — is a micro carbon fiber filled nylon that yields accurate parts with near flawless surface finish.

Onyx serves as a thermoplastic matrix for Markforged’s composite parts. It can be printed alone or reinforced with one of our continuous fibers to give strength comparable to aluminum. Use Onyx for anything from tooling and fixtures to end-use parts.

Onyx can be used alone, or further reinforced with embedded continuous carbon fiber, Kevlar, or fiberglass layers - parts truly transcending the limits of conventional 3D printed plastic. Like all Markforged composite materials, parts printed using Onyx are ready for use right off the print bed.

Onyx is a breakthrough material for use with the Markforged 3D printers. It is a material designed for printing stiff and strong parts that look good enough to be used for customer-facing assemblies. Onyx is based on a tough nylon and it gets its strength and appearance from chopped carbon.

At the core of Markforged’s unique fibre reinforcement 3D printing technology is the build material Onyx. It is a specially tuned PA6 copolymer (polyamide) filament with a chopped carbon fiber blend, adding great strength and stiffness unique to FFF printing.
