The second unit of the course introduces you to the analysis of consumer behavior. The decisions that individuals make about what and how much to consume are among the most important factors that shape the evolution of the overall economy, and we can analyze these decisions in terms of their underlying preferences.
Consumer theory is concerned with how a rational consumer would make consump-tion decisions. What makes this problem worthy of separate study, apart from the general problem of choice theory, is its particular structure that allows us to de-rive economically meaningful results.
Section 2.2 of this chapter will provide an overview of consumer behaviour, followed by models of human behaviour in Section 2.3. Section 2.4 will represent the main discussion of Chapter 2 by focusing on the definition, purpose and value of models of consumer behaviour. The chapter will be concluded with a short summary in Section 2.5.
