Born in Viseu, Portugal, on 10 November 1999, he developed as a player in his home country - at Padroense and Porto - before joining Benfica, where he made his first-team debut in 2017 and won the Portuguese league title.

Portuguese attacker Joao Felix re-joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract in August 2024, having previously been in the squad as a loan player for the second half of the 2022/23 season. On both occasions the attacker moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid.

Joao made his professional debut for Benfica’s second string at the age of 16, making him the youngest player to represent the side at the time. He played 30 league matches in two seasons between 2016 and 2018, also featuring for the club’s Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League.
