If you want a non-Chinese map app that works in China, I'd suggest some app based on the Open Street Map data. There are many, as far as I know. The one I use is from mapy.cz. It does not have the same level of coverage for businesses as Google Maps or Baidu Maps do, and the quality of data in some areas is spotty, but OTOH it has a pretty good ...

2022年9月7日 · So Google.com has less accurate satellite maps of China than most Chinese map services. However, Google.cn has been authorized to use the database, at least from 2006 to 2020. In theory Google.cn should still provide accurate satellite map for China right now but I haven't checked it since 2020 before replying to this post.

Gaode maps (AMap) is the most popular mapping service in China. I would say it’s the equivalent of Google Maps in Western countries. I’ve had no problems using it in rural China. It will have the most up to date information including traffic data and local business information. However note that the app is in Chinese only.

Map data in China must use the official GCJ-02 coordinate system with an intentional obfuscation offset. The offset is random (~50m - 500m in any direction) and the algorithm to correct for it is based on your location. Companies and apps (like baidu, wechat, ofo, etc) are or use licensed information to correct the offset.

Amap was my go to Chinese map(in Chinese), combined with the apps Universal Copy and google translate(tap to translate feature) for translation purposes. You'd be surprised how effective a chinese map only in Chinese can be for getting around.
