A 22-year-old Canadian man with ties to Waterloo Region has been accused by U.S. authorities of stealing US$65 million from two cryptocurrency platforms.

A Canadian man who allegedly stole $65 million worth of cryptocurrency could face up to 90 years in an American prison if convicted. According to prosecutors, Andean Medjedovic was able to withdraw millions of dollars of investor funds from cryptocurrency platforms KyberSwap and Indexed Finance from 2021 to 2023.

The defendant, Andean Medjedovic, 22, undertook sophisticated hacks of KyberSwap and Indexed Finance, crypto platforms that developed services on which users exchanged tokens with each other. He stole roughly $49 million and $16 million, according to an indictment unsealed by prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York.

The man, still at large, faces five charges, including wire fraud, computer damage, extortion, and money laundering.
