The Smithsonian Institution is closing its diversity office and freezing all federal hiring. The decision will affect dozens of American museums, research centers and libraries, as well as the National Zoo.

The Smithsonian Institution is closing its Office of Diversity, freezing federal hiring and ordering employees back to in-office work, according to an email sent by Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III.

A Trump executive order has led the largely government-funded institutions to roll back their diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

The museum’s move followed a similar one last week by the National Gallery, as museums try to comply with an executive order that called diversity programs “illegal and immoral.”

An executive order by Donald Trump prohibits all DEI programs at federal institutions. Some have already dismantled them.
