Safety officials are reminding parents about the most common hazards in the home in recognition of Burn Awareness Week.

The first week of February is national burn awareness week. The initiative, spearheaded by the National Burn Association, aims to raise awareness of the risks of fire in homes, schools, and workplaces.

The City of Erie Fire Department is highlighting National Burn Awareness Week. Fire chief Leonard Trott said the purpose of National Burn Awareness Week is to bring people’s attention to the need to be careful while cooking and with open flames.

The Reno Fire Department also recommends having a burn emergency kit available. If a small fire occurs in a frying pan, cover the fire with a metal lid or cookie sheet smother the flames. And one of the most important items to keep up to date to reduce fire risk, are smoke alarms.

This nationwide campaign, led by the American Burn Association, focuses on preventing burn injuries and promoting fire safety.
