You have to study the trail map in detail. Wherever it crosses or goes very near a street or cul-de-sac, it's very likely there will be an access point.

Friday I parked at Jones Day on Embarcadero and caught the Bay Trail over to Stevens Creek trail. There is also parking off El Camino Real right before 237. Then we got off the trail at Sleeper Street off of Cuesta street. Hope that helps.

I really would not recommend letting your children run on this path. There's a lot of running and cycling traffic which may not be safe for them. On the other hand, there are plenty of parks that are adjacent to the path including the huge Shoreline Park that would be great for them to run and be free.
